Why You Should Not Take Alexa Rank Seriously

Why you should not trust Alexa Rank?

When i started blogging, my first strategy was to improve  alexa rank of blog. Thoughts flowing in my mind were “Higher the alexa rank” – “Higher the income from incoming traffic” and this is where myth running in my brain got busted. This is not story about me but common myth amongst most of the bloggers and Netizens, the story is bit different.

What Is Alexa Rank?

Alexa Internet, Inc. is a California-based subsidiary company of Amazon.com that is known for its toolbar and website. Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources.

How Alexa Rank Works?

Alexa Rank indicates how much traffic a website is getting. It works by collecting Browsing data from the users who use Alexa toolbar and Alexa Widget on their websites.
The reason why i am asking you not to rely on Alexa is that, it does not show you the real picture.
Let me give you some examples.
Suppose your website daily gets 100000 visitors daily. Not more than 10% of the visitor would be using the alexa toolbar . So what will happen is that Alexa will count only 10k visitors.

Case Study:

One of my friend’s website securitygeekpro.com was getting traffic of about 30-35k visitors daily and yet its rank was stuck on 1.5 lakh approx.  On the other hand one of my blog get  traffic of 2000 visitors approx. daily and it is ranked around 75 thousand in Alexa.com.
This is because vresults.com audience didn’t use Alexa toolbar as much as the audience of the second blog did.
So what i am trying to say is that Alexa Rank System cannot be trusted as it is inaccurate.

Problems With Alexa Rank:

The worst part about Alexa Rank is that it can be faked. You can do it by generating fake hits. With the help of some plugins, that will automatically refresh a webpage, you can cheat Alexa Rank. That means if you refresh your website, your Rank will start increasing.
This will even suck up your data plan and your web server bandwidth, and in worse, your server may crash too. At the end, you will be paying extra for your hosting and dataplans.

What else Should I Use?

If you are so much concerned about your blog Ranking, then you should workout on your Google Page Rank. It is a far better way to judge a website. Page Rank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page and used by Google in Ranking website in its search results. The higher your Google Page rank, the more you get featured in Google Search results.

Most of the bloggers also use feedburner to showoff their popularity. The more you get the subscribers, the more popular is your website.

Conclusion:

Though most of advertiser take alexa rank into account but if you want to avoid alexa rank, you can use feedburner to show the advertisers your popularity. Mature Bloggers show their Google PageRank and feedburner counter to show their popularity. Remember What important is getting visitors to website, not any rank. If you are getting good amount of visitors, then you wont need Alexa help to find advertisement on your website.

I trust Alexa ranking more than Google rank

But of course trying to fool any system is silly and not worth it in the long run
